Update:  I am advised that all reference to 'heroin' in the articles printed by the Royal Gazette in respect of Mr Darrell are incorrect. Apparently, Mr Darrell was first arrested at Gatwick on the 12th of Dec 2004  in possession of six kilos of cannabis resin but at the time incorrectly charged with a heroin related offence. Mr Darrell returned to Court in late January and was recharged with Cannabis resin possession*.  He served 10 months of a 21month sentence.

Mr Darrell is apparently now the Production Manager of an Intervention Program run by the Ministry of Social Rehabilitation, Bermuda.

*it is not currently known whether this was 'possession', 'possession with intent to supply' or 'importation'.

Pair identified in UK heroin arrests - December 2004

Former Police officer Tory Darrell and Wayne Mahon were the two men arrested at Gatwick airport on Sunday for attempting to smuggle $20 million worth of heroin to Bermuda, The Royal Gazette has learned.
A UK Customs spokesman yesterday confirmed the duo were apprehended by airport Police while in transit from the Netherlands, following the discovery of six kilograms of heroin concealed within the kick-boxing equipment they had brought with them.

The heroin could have a street value here of $20 million. The spokesman said: “I can only speculate at this stage, but given the amount of drugs and the quite sophisticated nature of the smuggling operation, both could be looking at a prison sentence of ten to 15 years if convicted – perhaps longer.”
Police spokesman Dwayne Caines confirmed yesterday that Darrell is a former Policeman and is currently employed at TCD.

In Crawley Magistrates’ Court on Monday, both were charged with the importation of a controlled drug.
It is understood a trial date is likely to be set for the beginning of February.

17th December:

Serving Policeman arrested in the UK – later released on bail.  A full-time Policeman who has been employed with the Bermuda Police Service for ten years was arrested in the UK yesterday on suspicion of drug importation.  “An investigation is continuing locally and we would like to make it clear that the Officer has not been charged and has been released on bail,” said Media spokesman Caines. The name, age, and rank of the officer was not released to the media

Bermudapolicerecord is not a official Bermuda Police web site but independently maintained.  However, the diary entries are an accurate representation of former Detective Constable 217's
daily diary of activities on the island's of Bermuda from 1988 to 1991.  The officer probably had the highest arrest and conviction record on the island.  However, he was eventually the subject of unsubstantiated petty allegations in respect of which the island's police service, in breach of its own disciplinary regulations, did not hold a disciplinary hearing.  Instead, the then Commissioner of Police Clive Donald, declined to renew the officer's contract.  For further information, please follow the links: Complaint / Subverted & Betrayed / Back-Stabbing
