Craig Morfitt
information about policing the islands of Bermuda

Reaching the heights of Inspector in Bermuda as a former UK constable is no mean achievement.  Craig has over 20 years service in Bermuda.  So will the Commissioner of Police accept Inspector Morfitt's findings, that police officers should be PROSECUTED? Will the credibility of Inspector Morfitt be undermined by the Commissioner of Police?

A press report appears below.  What is not currently known is when the report was handed to the Commissioner of Police  and why there has, to date, been no mention of prosecuting the officers. The DPP is apparently considering the matter (click here)

Why was the leak (see below) to the Royal Gazette published after the trial had concluded? Was the information (coincidentally) only released then, or was someone asked not to prejudice the trial?

In addition there would appear to be in-fighting.  Inspector Morfitt was accused of violent conduct against another officer - David Bhagwam

As ever, the Bermuda police service appears to be a law unto themselves.

February 2005 Royal Gazette

The inspector who headed up the internal Police investigation into the allegations of brutality recommended the officers be prosecuted, The Royal Gazette can reveal.  It is understood that Insp. Craig Morfitt has handed a lengthy report of his findings to Police Commissioner Jonathan Smith, in which he suggested several of the accused be brought up on charges of assault and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

The credibility of the Police was severely damaged during the course of the pre-trial legal arguments, when the service’s own forensic expert, Dr. Valerie Rao, rejected the Police’s submission that Madeiros had sustained his injuries in a fall while attempting to escape custody. Instead, she insisted the bruising shown in the photographs was “only consistent” with a beating.

In a further twist, it also emerged during the course of the lengthy proceedings that one of the officers accused of violent conduct, Det. Con. David Bhagwam, attempted to file charges against Insp. Morfitt for an assault which allegedly took place during one of their two interviews together.

It is understood that Insp. Morfitt was cleared of any wrongdoing.

Police Commissioner Jonathan Smith refused to comment on the allegations last night, explaining he was not at liberty to speak to the media about the case until the appeals period is over.

Bermudapolicerecord is not a official Bermuda Police web site but independently maintained.  However, the diary entries are an accurate representation of former Detective Constable 217's
daily diary of activities on the island's of Bermuda from 1988 to 1991.  The officer probably had the highest arrest and conviction record on the island.  However, he was eventually the subject of unsubstantiated petty allegations in respect of which the island's police service, in breach of its own disciplinary regulations, did not hold a disciplinary hearing.  Instead, the then Commissioner of Police Clive Donald, declined to renew the officer's contract.  For further information, please follow the links: Complaint / Subverted & Betrayed / Back-Stabbing
